Find me on:

Idahoians interested in gardening only have about 100 days per year to practice this very enjoyable hobby.  One way of extending the growing season is to build a greenhouse.  However, with all the different greenhouse choices available, buying a greenhouse can be pretty intimidating.  Here are few steps to make purchasing your greenhouse easier.

Greenhouse Charteristics:

Some of the features to look for include

  • Greenhouse are as unique as you are.
  • You deserve one which fits your needs.

Style

The first decision is to select a free standing or home-attached greenhouse model. Free standing allows you to select the appropriate site to maximize sunlight exposure and aesthetic appeal. Home-attached greenhouses offer convenient access to services, good use of yard space and added insulation.

Size

Popular backyard sizes range from 8x8 to 12x16 which not only fit well in most backyards, but oftentimes do not require a building permit. However, check with local building code office for specific information.

Climate

If you live in an area prone to high winds, heavy snow or the occasional hurricane, some considertaion should be given to the weather tightness of the greenhouse with respect to drafts, water penetration and strength. Idaho residents know that most greenouses need to handle at elast 90mph winds and 30lbs/sq ft snow load.  Make sure your greenhouse dealer can build to these standards.

Location

  • Ideally you should position your greenhouse so that 6 hours of sunlight per day is available during winter months.
  • Anything less and you may have to supplement with grow lights.
  • If possible, align the longest side of your greenhouse to face south.
  • This permits the roof to attract the most amount of sunlight during the day.

Glass vs. Polycarbonate

Basically the difference really comes down to “form over function”. Glass is a traditional glazing used to beautify your yard that gives you the ability to control light transmission with external shading options. Polycarbonate offers built in shading, is maintenance free and virtually unbreakable. Glass provides a more open feel when working inside the greenhouse.

Longevity

Make sure your greenhouse dealer offers a substantial warranty with your greenhouse.  Anything less than a 5-year warranty and it is likely you will have to replace materials avery couple of years.  Mondern manufacturing techniques are such that the polycarbonite should last your lifetime.  Also, make sure your greenhouse company has been in business at least as long as its warranty to ensure quality.
