Find me on:

Backyard Adventures Titan Peak 3Backyard Adventures Titan Peak 2     I once served both as a military officer and as single parent of a wonderful little girl.  Not only was I trying to figure out how best to rear a little girl, but I was also trying to develop skills in a demanding profession.  Spending 30-60 minutes at the park play sets involved the components of a major military exercise.  I had to evaluate the location, my work schedule, weather conditions, and drive time, just to find the right spot to spend quality time.  Heading to the park involved loading pull-ups, spare clothes, blankets, water, snacks, toys, games, hats, chairs, books, and a first aid kit.  To top it all off, my first trip to the park solicited a mother’s comment to me, “Oh, it is sooo cute that you let your daughter pick out her own clothes!”  To which I replied, “No. I didn’t.” which was answered with a collective, “ohhhhh dear” from all the moms.  This incident led to a near daily anxiety about how I was screwing up my daughter’s entire life because I could not match clothes properly.

Years later, after I married a wonderful woman, had more children, and countless struggles to visit parks in different parts of the world; we made the decision to install some backyard playground equipment.  No longer did I have any anxiety about what my kids wore.  Blue Disney slippers combined with Thor’s helmet, a pink tutu, a Batman shirt, and a cape now seemed like a perfect outfit for playing on the outdoor playsets.  Additionally, the preparation for playing outside now consisted of looking out the kitchen window and saying, “meh; no lightning.  Let's play!”

Furthermore, I found that the best part of a backyard playset was there was no more car fighting.  Gone were the crying meltdowns because one child got in before the others.  We eliminated the blood-curdling screams from the back of the caravan because one child was breathing another child’s air.  Moreover, there were no inevitable child announcements for the need for a bathroom 2 minutes after we left the house, but 15 minutes before we got to the park.

Finally, the best part of backyard adventures playsets is we now have time to play with our children.  Running, tickling, and laughter has become the mainstay of our backyard adventures.  I still wear my pirate hat for when we do battle on the high seas or my grandfather’s fish hat when I play the shark looking for princes or princesses to eat.
